The garden office, Christleton
Office · 3.0 × 2.4 m · Larch · 2025
Our smallest room. The desk stands in the corner between the window and the door, and the sedum roof is for whoever looks down on it from the bedroom.
Past builds
A potter, a guitarist, an accountant and a household of teenagers. Each is here with its size, its cladding and the year it went up.

Our smallest room. The desk stands in the corner between the window and the door, and the sedum roof is for whoever looks down on it from the bedroom.
Gym · 5.0 × 3.0 m · Composite · 2024
Composite boards and stainless fixings, in a garden that takes the wind straight off the sea. The roof slopes one way to shed it, which made the room tall enough to need planning permission. We applied, and the rower got a rooflight.
Office · 4.0 × 3.0 m · Larch · 2024
Every panel went in through the front door of a terraced house and out of the back. It’s in a conservation area, so the council saw the drawings first.
Spare room · 5.0 × 3.6 m · Larch · 2024
Somewhere for family to stay, with a toilet and basin. People sleep in it, so it needed planning permission and building regulations approval. We applied for both.
Studio · 5.4 × 3.6 m · Cedar · 2023
The garden drops half a metre, so the room and its deck stand on ground screws and nothing was dug out. It’s far enough from every boundary to have a pitched roof, and the glazed gable looks up the valley.
Office · 3.6 × 2.6 m · Cedar · 2023
Two screens, a wall of files and a view down the garden to the Dee. He says the files are the tidiest they have ever been.
Studio · 4.6 × 3.0 m · Larch · 2022
A wheel, a kiln on its own circuit and a sink with a clay trap, at the end of a terrace garden you can only reach through the house. The walls are lined with painted steel in place of plaster, so the clay washes off.
Gym · 4.4 × 3.4 m · Composite · 2022
A stiffened floor for a rack and 200 kg of plates, and acoustic insulation so next door doesn’t hear the bar go down.
Spare room · 4.0 × 3.0 m · Larch · 2021
A sofa, a screen and a door that shuts. Their parents report that the house has been quieter ever since.
Studio · 5.0 × 3.6 m · Cedar · 2020
For a guitarist with neighbours on three sides. Acoustic insulation in the walls, floor and roof, and nobody has knocked yet.
Size, cladding and year to be decided
It starts as a dashed line. Price your room and it becomes a drawing with a number under it.
Two of these are still drawings. That is how every room starts, and we haven’t been back to those two with a camera. Several of the owners are happy to show theirs to someone thinking of buying one, so if you’d like to stand in a finished room, ask at your design visit.
Next step
Pick the size and cladding of the build you liked and see what it would cost today. Or book a design visit and we’ll bring the drawings.
