The garden office, Christleton
Office · 3.0 × 2.4 m · Larch · 2025
Our smallest room. The desk stands in the corner between the window and the door, and the sedum roof is for whoever looks down on it from the bedroom.
Where we build · Chester
Our workshop is fifteen minutes from the Cross, and about a third of the rooms we build are in the city and the villages round it. Chester gardens tend to be small, walled and reached through the house. We build for that.
Building here
A lot of Chester’s Victorian terraces have no side access, or a passage about as wide as a wheelie bin. Our wall panels are made no wider than 1.2 m and light enough for two people, so they go in at the front door, down the hall and out of the back. We put floor protection down before the first one comes in.
Much of the city inside and around the walls, and long stretches beside the Dee, are conservation areas, and there are listed buildings on streets where you wouldn’t expect them. The rules are tighter there. We look up every address before we quote, and where an application is needed we make it.
In a ten-metre garden a room has to earn its footprint. The Nook takes about the space of a large shed. We often tuck it into a back corner, keep it at 2.5 m so it can sit near the wall, and give it a sedum roof so the view from upstairs is of plants.
Past builds
“The calculator gave us a range before anyone had visited, and the fixed quote landed inside it. Nothing was added afterwards, which was not our experience with the kitchen.”

Every panel went in through the front door of a terraced house and out of the back. It’s in a conservation area, so the council saw the drawings first.

A wheel, a kiln on its own circuit and a sink with a clay trap, at the end of a terrace garden you can only reach through the house. The walls are lined with painted steel in place of plaster, so the clay washes off.
Places
Design visits in Chester are usually within the week, including weekday evenings and Saturday mornings. Not on the list? Ask us; if it’s within an hour of Chester we probably cover it.
Chester’s rules are England’s rules, and most gardens here can take a room without an application. The exceptions are the conservation areas and listed buildings, which the city has plenty of. Read the planning guide
