What they’re for

Somewhere to work, make things or lift things

Most of our rooms are offices. The rest are studios, music rooms and gyms, and about one in six is a spare room for a family that has run out of house.

Inside a small white-painted garden office: a desk with a laptop and shelves above it, a white chair, a chest of drawers under the window and a glazed sliding door onto decking.
The garden office, Christleton

Garden offices

Insulated like a house, wired for data and quiet enough for calls. One desk fits in The Nook; two fit in The Study with room for an armchair.

A guitar on a stand and a wooden chair with a radio on it, in front of dark-framed glazed doors that look onto a garden.
The music room, Oxton

Studios and gyms

Floors stiffened for a kiln or a loaded rack, acoustic insulation for a drum kit, and glazing placed for the light you need.

Past builds

Three we built earlier

A studio on a slope, a potter’s workshop and a room for lifting weights. The gallery has all ten, with what each is used for and what it’s clad in.

A cedar-clad garden studio with a pitched roof and a gable that is nearly all glass, on a deck raised off the ground, with a tall table and stools outside.

The hillside studio, Llangollen

Studio · 5.4 × 3.6 m · Cedar · 2023

The garden drops half a metre, so the room and its deck stand on ground screws and nothing was dug out. It’s far enough from every boundary to have a pitched roof, and the glazed gable looks up the valley.

Inside a potter’s studio: shelves of pots on a white ribbed wall, an armchair with an apron on it, a basket, a work table and the edge of a potter’s wheel.

The potter’s studio, Hoole

Studio · 4.6 × 3.0 m · Larch · 2022

A wheel, a kiln on its own circuit and a sink with a clay trap, at the end of a terrace garden you can only reach through the house. The walls are lined with painted steel in place of plaster, so the clay washes off.

A barbell with a curved bar and two dumbbells on a rubber mat on a dark wooden floor, with light from a window falling on the wall behind.

The lifting room, Wrexham

Gym · 4.4 × 3.4 m · Composite · 2022

A stiffened floor for a rack and 200 kg of plates, and acoustic insulation so next door doesn’t hear the bar go down.

How it works

Made in the workshop, then built in about two weeks

The panels are made indoors, which is why we’re only in your garden for eight to ten working days. From saying yes to sitting in it takes ten to twelve weeks.

  2. Design visit

    About an hour, free

  3. Drawings and a fixed quote

Will it need planning permission?

Probably not. Most garden rooms don’t, and ours are 2.5 m high so they can sit near a boundary without it. We check your address before we quote. Read the planning guide

Who we are

A joiner, a designer and four more of us

Briarholt was started in 2014 by Mark, a joiner, and Elin, an architectural designer. There are six of us now. We build about forty rooms a year, all within an hour of the workshop, and one of the two of them comes to every design visit.

“The calculator gave us a range before anyone had visited, and the fixed quote landed inside it. Nothing was added afterwards, which was not our experience with the kitchen.”

Hannah, Hoole · A Study, used as an office

“Elin looked up our address before we had paid a penny, found we were in a protected landscape and dealt with the council herself. We just waited for the letter.”

Siân, Llangollen · A Studio, on a slope

“Three winters of wind off the estuary and it looks the way it did the day they left. I have done nothing to it except row in it.”

Priya, West Kirby · A gym in composite

Where we build

Within an hour of the workshop

The workshop is just outside Chester, and we don’t charge for travel anywhere we cover. Each area has its own quirks, so each has its own page.
